Where do you get your scripts? Who can join the Bare Bones Outreach Ministry? Can a child in second grade join? How long has this ministry existed?
A puppeteer is a member of the Zion Bare Bones Puppet Outreach Ministry who dons a puppet and lip-syncs to music. A puppeteer may also use a puppet in a segue to introduce the next song in the show. When working in a segue, the puppeteer may use a character’s voice and not his or her own voice. A propeteer is a member of the Zion Bare Bones Puppet Outreach Ministry who cues props during the performance of a song. The use of props is scripted and not random. The Webster’s dictionary defines segue as a “transition from one musical number or theme to another”. We place segues between each of the songs we lip sync in order to give the puppeteers and propeteers a chance to change position, puppets or props and to get ready for the next song. Where do you get your scripts? Scripts are written by the Puppet Ministry Team. The songs are selected by the Puppet Ministry Team. Some of the songs are selected from Righteous Pop Music CDs obtained from One Way Street. Some songs are selected from current music played on the radio. One song was written by the Puppet Ministry Team with music played by Pete Prochnow. Who can join the Bare Bones Outreach Ministry? Children in Grades 3, 4, 5 and 6 who attend Zion Lutheran Church are eligible for the puppet ministry. We would also welcome those in the high school and adult age range. Please contact Lauren Huberty if you are interested. Can a child in second grade join? No. There are certain motor skills required for puppeteering. We have found that even some third-grade students do not have quite the level of skill needed for lip-syncing. However, we start those puppeteers out as propeteers and periodically access their lip-syncing skills in order to progress them into puppeteering. How long has this ministry existed? The Bare Bones Puppet Outreach Ministry began in September of 2003. This ministry started with a stage made from PVC pipe, 8 puppets that were made by volunteers from this church, and about 8 children in Grades 3, 4 and 5. Our props were made from cardboard. That first year the team performed twice within the church. Our team performs on Wednesday evenings. In general, we like to begin our performance around 6:30 PM and end by 7:30 PM. This timing is in keeping with our practice schedule. We have performed at assisted living facilities, other churches, the Portage Public Library, the YMCA, and at migrant worker camps. |
